Coping with the customs and expectations in the countries where they are now living, the mainly female characters in these tales have to choose whether to cling to their Indian culture, discard it completely, or learn how to adjust and compromise. It's a challenge! Themes of courtship, marriage and betrayal – of losing and re-forming one's identity while trying to live up to Indian ideals of behaviour in an alien environment – contain all the vibrancy of India herself.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
DIVYA MATHUR is a multi-award-winning author of six poetry and five story collections, most recently Made in India and Hindi@Swarg.in. Her story collection, Akrosh , won her the Katha-UK Award. Widely published, and Editor of three anthologies of stories, she has translated five books for children. Divya is the Founding President of Vatayan: Poetry on the South Bank, a charity which encourages poets worldwide and works for interfaith and intercultural understanding.
